A scaffolding tower was installed for sign repairs at the side of a busy main road near Winchester

Service we supplied: Scaffold tower to access signage.

Location: Starbucks, A303 West, Popham, Winchester, SO21 3SP.

Customer requirements: We gave this customer a quotation for access around a Starbucks sign so that they could work on the electrics at the top of the signage. This was a quick turnaround job, so the structure was only in place a few days, although we gave the customer a 7 day rental period.

Issues that arose: There were no issues whilst erecting this scaffold. However, we were on a grass area on the side of a very busy motorway, the A303 west in Winchester, so we had to be aware of our safety and the oncoming vehicles. As with all our jobs, our scaffolders wore hi-visibility vests. Access was fine; we could park our truck on the grass verge close to the sign.

What we did: Our scaffolders erected a 4.0-metre-high, square-shaped tower to surround the large Starbucks sign. All four sides were 3.9 metres in length (13ft) each. This tower was a total of 2 scaffold lifts, with only the top fully boarded. The working platform was placed around the base of the sign to give our customer full access to all sides.

What else was included?

• We used 9x standards (upright) tubes for the framework of this tower.
• Ladder access was provided from the ground to the second top lift.
• A ladder gate was installed for additional fall protection
• Double handrails and toe boards were fixed around all four sides of this structure.
• Wooden sole boards were used for the tube to sit on to protect the grass.
• We used approximately 19 whitewood scaffolding planks, including toe boards, to create the base for the platform.

Rental period: This customer hired this scaffold for 1 week whilst investigating and fixing the electrical problem.
