Purpose: Access for Solar Panel Installation
We recently completed this scaffolding project at a two-storey property on Miller Drive in Fareham. The scaffold was required to provide safe working access for solar panel installers, with two elevations scaffolded to give full access to the required roof areas.
The left-hand elevation included a 16-metre scaffold with an 8-metre beam section, which allowed access to continue from the front of the property and over the single-storey roof. Further along this elevation, the scaffold also had to be cantilevered over the neighbour’s pathway as no scaffolding was permitted to touch the ground on their side.
On the right-hand side, a dog-legged scaffold was erected to follow the building’s shape and changing heights. Together, the two scaffold elevations provided the working platforms and roof-level access required for the solar panel installation.

The scaffold along the left-hand side of the property measured approximately 16 linear metres long and 4.5 metres high, with two lifts and a working platform five boards deep.
This elevation also incorporated an 8-metre beam section, which provided access from the front of the property over the single-storey roof. This allowed the scaffold to continue across this section and provide the access required for the solar panel installation.
Access within the alleyway presented another consideration. The neighbour would not allow any part of the scaffolding to touch the floor of their pathway, so the scaffold on this side had to be designed around that restriction.
To achieve the required access, the outside ledger was cantilevered over the neighbouring pathway. This was supported by spurring the outside ledger from the standards positioned on the inside of the scaffold.
Apollo ties were installed into the brickwork as part of this arrangement. This allowed the scaffold to extend into the required working position without placing standards or other scaffold components onto the neighbour’s pathway below.
The scaffold to the right-hand side of the property was configured differently because it needed to follow the shape of the building.
This section measured approximately 10 metres by 4 metres by 6 metres and was constructed in a dog-leg arrangement. The scaffold ranged between approximately 1.5 metres and 4.5 metres high.
Working platforms ranged from four to five boards deep. Following the shape of the property provided access around the right-hand elevation, rather than using a single straight scaffold run that would not have matched the building’s footprint.
The scaffold was erected specifically to give the solar panel installation team practical access around the required areas of the property.
We fitted double handrails to each working platform, with additional double handrails at the gable end to protect installers from falling.
Fixed ladder access was incorporated into the scaffold so that the different working levels could be reached without relying on temporary or loose access equipment. A safety ladder gate was also fitted at the ladder access point to help maintain protection around the working platform.
These measures provided a defined route onto the scaffold and protected working areas for the solar installation team.
Once erected, the scaffold provided the solar panel installers with safe access to the required areas of this two-storey property on Miller Drive, Fareham. The different sections were built to suit the property’s shape and the access restrictions encountered on site.
This scaffold was supplied for a four-week hire period at a total cost of £2,200.
