Project:

Scaffold for roof access.

Location: St Cross Road, Winchester, SO23.

Duration of hire: 2 weeks.

Cost: £900.

Overview

Provide safe access to the main roof for maintenance and repair works.

Scaffold specification and dimensions

This scaffold structure was designed to provide access to the property’s roofline, ensuring all necessary load-bearing capacity for personnel and materials.

  • Height: Approximately 7.5 metres.
  • Length/run: Approximately 6.0 linear metres.
  • Working platform depth: 5 boards deep,

Critical safety and protection measures

Given the residential location and proximity to the public thoroughfare, two non-standard safety measures were implemented to mitigate risks to the public and the structure.

Foaming of upright standards at access points

To comply with public safety best practices, protective foam padding was applied to the vertical scaffold standards (tubes) located immediately adjacent to the main entryway.

  • Rationale: The upright standards near the door posed a potential collision hazard for residents and visitors entering or exiting the property.
  • Action: High-density foam sleeves were secured around these specific vertical scaffold tubes to cushion potential impact and reduce the risk of injury.

Protective netting

The entire perimeter of the top lift of the scaffold structure was encased in specialised debris netting.

  • Rationale: Roofing works, particularly those involving tile or slate removal, generate significant debris, dust, and potential falling objects.
  • Action: The scaffold structure was netted around the top working platform only. This measure provided a robust barrier, containing any materials accidentally dropped from height and protecting pedestrians, neighbouring property, and garden areas below.

Conclusion

This scaffolding project at St Cross Rd, Winchester, required secure, elevated access for roof maintenance, which our qualified team provided. Extra safety measures, including foam protection at ground level and perimeter netting, were implemented to support public safety. No incidents were reported during the two-week hire period, and all requirements were met within the scheduled timeline and budget.
