Reaching the Wall Behind a Conservatory

Conservatories almost always sit exactly where you need access, against the rear of the house, right under the part a roofer, window fitter, renderer or builder needs to reach. That might be the wall above it, the roof and gutters, the first-floor windows, or even the chimney at the top. The problem is the same whatever the job: a conservatory roof is glass or polycarbonate on a light frame. It won’t take any weight at all, so you can’t stand a scaffold on it or up against it in the normal way.

The answer is to bridge over it. We build the scaffold up either side of the conservatory and span across the top with beams strong enough to carry a working platform, so the platform sits above the conservatory with a clear gap beneath it. Nothing touches the glass, and your tradesman gets safe access to whatever’s above, wall, windows, roof or chimney.

Working Out the Span

The first thing we assess is how far we’re bridging and where the load can land. The beams have to be sized for the span and the weight they’ll carry, and the base set on solid ground either side of the conservatory, so this always starts with a look on site, not a guess.

Clearing the Glass

The bridge is set high enough and true enough that the platform and everything on it sits clear of the conservatory roof. No leg, board or fitting rests on the glass or the frame at any point.

With the bridge in place, we carry the platform up to wherever the job needs it,  the gutter line, the roof, or the full elevation, so your tradesman can get on with the re-roof, rendering, repair or whatever the job is, with the conservatory safe underneath.

No two conservatories are the same, and the bridge has to suit the one it’s going over. A small lean-to is a different job from a big wraparound Victorian; a low-pitched roof gives you more room than a tall one; and where the load can land, patio, borders, soft ground, a boundary close by, changes how the whole thing is set out. That’s why this always begins with a site visit, and why we won’t quote a conservatory bridge blind.

Once we’ve seen it, we design the span around what’s there, so the access is safe, clears the glass, and gets your tradesman exactly where they need to be.
