Getting Safe Access to a Chimney Stack
A chimney is one of the trickier things to reach on a house. It sits at the very top, often set back behind the ridge, and whoever’s working on it needs to get at all four sides, you can’t repoint or reflaunch a stack from a ladder hooked over the ridge. That’s why the safe way to do it is a boarded platform built right around the stack, with guardrails, so the person working has somewhere solid to stand and move around the whole chimney.

Repointing and Rebuilding
Raking out and repointing tired mortar joints, or rebuilding the brickwork where a stack has started to come apart, both need the builder able to reach every course on every face.
Re-Flaunching
Renewing the flaunching, the mortar bed that holds the pots in place, so the top of the stack is watertight again. It’s fiddly work right at the crown, so the platform has to sit at the right height.
Pots, Cowls and Caps
Replacing cracked pots, fitting cowls or capping off a redundant flue, quick jobs, but all up at the top of the stack where you need a safe footing to handle the parts.
Flashing and Leadwork
Renewing the lead flashing where the chimney meets the roof, one of the most common causes of a leak. This needs access to the base of the stack all the way round.
Chimney Removal
Taking a stack down, either to the roofline or right out, and making the roof good afterwards. This is heavier work and the access must be set out to get the materials safely down as well as up.
Reaching the Stack, Whatever the Roof
Every chimney sits differently. Some are right above the eaves and easy enough to get to; others are set back behind the ridge, up a steep gable, or on a tall property where the stack is a long way off the ground. The job is always the same in principle: a safe, boarded platform around the stack, but how we get there depends entirely on the roof in front of us.
We work that out on site before we quote, so you’re not paying for more scaffold than the job needs, and your tradesman isn’t left short of access on the day.
Up the Elevation and Along the Roof
The usual approach: we take the access up the side of the house nearest the stack, then run it along the roof to sit a platform around the chimney. It gives the most room to work and is the safest option where there’s space to build it.
Building Off the Roof
Where a full scaffold up to the ridge isn’t practical, a stack in the middle of a large roof, say, or limited ground to build from, we can build a smaller, self-contained access off the roof itself. Done properly this is tied in and the load spread across the roof so nothing bears on a single point, giving a safe platform without scaffolding the whole house.

Most stack jobs are booked by a builder or roofer who’s doing the actual work, or by a homeowner who’s lined one up. Either way we’ll fit the access around their start date and, if it helps, talk to them directly about exactly where they need the platform and how much room they want around the stack.

Why Can't the Work Just Be Done Off a Ladder?
Because a stack has four faces and a top, and none of it can be reached safely from a ladder leaned against the roof. Repointing, reflaunching or rebuilding means working with both hands, often for hours, right at the top of the house. A platform around the stack is the only safe way to do that, and it’s what most builders and roofers will insist on before they start.
Do You Have to Scaffold the Whole House?
Not always. Sometimes the neatest way to reach a stack is to build a smaller access off the roof rather than scaffold the full elevation, it depends on where the chimney sits and what there is to build from. We’ll work out the least you need to do the job safely and quote that, not the whole house by default.
How Much Does It Cost to Scaffold a Chimney?
Less than a full re-roof scaffold, usually, because you’re reaching one part of the roof rather than the whole thing, but it depends on the height of the house and how awkward the stack is to get to. Can You Put It Up Quickly? My Builder's Booked In
Usually, yes. Stack access is often a smaller, quicker build than a full scaffold, so we can generally fit it in around your builder’s or roofer’s start date. Tell us when they’re due and we’ll do our best to have it ready
A Photo — Is That Enough to Quote?
It’s a great start. A clear photo of the chimney and the roof around it, plus the height of the property, usually tells us enough to give you a price or at least a close guide. For an awkward one we may want to pop out and look first.
Do You Take It Down Afterwards?
Yes, that’s included. Once your tradesman’s finished with the stack we come back and strike the access and leave everything clean. Just let us know when the work’s done.
