Service we supplied: Scaffolding for access to the conservatory roof.

Location: 70 Belmont Road, Southampton, SO17 2GE.

Customer requirements: We were asked to supply a quotation to put up a scaffold to the rear elevation of a property in the Portswood area of Southampton to allow access to a conservatory roof so it could replaced. The back of the property was 3 storeys high; however, the conservatory roof was situated between the 2nd and 3rd floors of the property. Our quote included a hire period of 4 weeks.

Issues that arose: We faced no challenges when erecting or dismantling this structure. Access to the rear of the house was down the side, and our truck was parked nearby.

What we did:

• We built a structure that measured approximately 9 metres wide and 4 metres high on the rear section of the conservatory. This scaffold needed to be 2 lifts to reach the required height. We also installed a single lift 4-metre return that was only 2 metres high as the ground was raised on this section of the property.
• The top lift of the scaffold on the conservatory’s rear and side sections was fully boarded and 4 scaffold boards deep.
• There was an external staircase to the left-hand side on the rear of this property, so we were required to “spur” over part of this using two diagonal support braces to ensure that our scaffold could stretch across the whole conservatory so the roofers could access all parts.
• Double handrails and toe boards were fixed to the external perimeter of the top lift.
• We provided fixed ladder access on the return scaffold around the right-hand side of the property.
• A ladder gate was also installed as additional fall protection for the workers.

Rental period: This project’s scaffold hire period was 4 weeks.
