Scaffold for repair works on an old vestry building in Gosport

Service we supplied: Scaffolding for roof access.

Location: The Vestry, Stoke Road, Gosport, PO12.

Customer requirements: We were initially asked to provide a quotation for an 8ft wide tower to be erected at the front of this converted vestry. However, the customer then needed further additions to the tower, which extended the scaffold onto the roof area, approximately 11 metres high. When complete, the cost for this structure was £1500 with a rental period of 6 weeks.

Issues that arose: The main issue our scaffolders needed to be aware of was the location of the building, as it was on a busy road. Our team would have to take care when removing equipment from the lorry and carrying it to the building because there was a lot of vehicle and foot traffic.

What we did: 

• Our scaffolders initially put up an 8ft (2.4 metres) wide tower to the front left-hand side of the converted vestry.
• We then were asked to extend the structure, so we built a 6m wide beam section that reached approx. 7 metres high.
• Then a 4m return was added, which was also at a height of 7 metres, to allow access to the roof’s lower section. This platform was 3 boards wide.
• Our scaffolders then erected a 2.4-metre hop-up at the front of the building that was around 9 metres tall and was a 5-board wide platform.
• Another 8ft hop-up was then installed on top of this, taking the structure to around 11 metres high with a total of 6 scaffold lifts.
• We then had to erect 2 small return scaffolds that were extended into the roof, measuring 1.5 metres in length, with the lower level being 3 boards wide and the higher level having a platform width of 7 scaffolding boards.
• Double handrails and toe boards were installed throughout the scaffold on all working and access platforms.
• Yellow safety ladder gates were installed on all lifts.
• A total of five steel ladders were supplied and fixed to the framework,
• Scaffold boards were placed on the roof to rest the tubes on to protect the tiles from damage.
• Debris netting was installed around the perimeter of the very top lift.

Rental period: Our customer wanted to hire the scaffolding for a maximum of 6 weeks to ensure they had plenty of time to finish their work.
