At The Causeway in Fareham, we recently erected a scaffold to provide safe access to a gutter valley that would otherwise be difficult to reach from ground level.
Access to gutter valleys can be challenging because of their location and the limited working space around roof structures. For this project, the requirement was to create a secure working platform that allowed safe access for maintenance and repair work while ensuring the scaffold remained stable throughout the hire period.
We erected a scaffold tower measuring approximately 2.4 metres wide by 5.5 metres high, with a working platform 7 boards deep. The design provided a practical working area, enabling operatives to access the gutter valley and work safely and efficiently.
A key consideration for this installation was the presence of the 2 bay window roofs beneath the working area. To add stability to the scaffold section above these roofs, we spurred the scaffold internally. This method helped distribute loads effectively and ensured the structure remained secure while maintaining safe access to the required area.
The working platform was fitted with double handrails to provide collective fall protection for all scaffold users. This ensured that operatives could work confidently while remaining protected at height. The generous platform depth also provided sufficient room for movement and for handling tools and materials associated with the works.
A fixed ladder was installed onto the scaffold structure, providing safe access to the platform. Fixed ladder access provides a reliable, controlled means of reaching the working platform while maintaining clear access routes throughout the scaffold.
To further improve site safety, a safety ladder gate was installed at the platform access point. This helps prevent accidental exposure to the ladder opening and creates a safer working environment when entering or leaving the platform.
Additional safety measures were also incorporated at ground level. Foam protection was fitted to the exposed scaffold tube in the access area, reducing the risk of accidental contact and providing extra protection for anyone moving around the scaffold base.
Throughout the project, we focused on creating a scaffold that met the access requirements while providing a practical, secure solution for working above the existing bay window roof structures. We designed every element of the scaffold with safety, stability, and ease of use in mind.
We supplied the scaffold on a four-week hire period at £500, giving the client enough time to complete the required works while benefiting from a professional access solution tailored to the property’s layout.
We provide residential scaffolding and safe access solutions for roof repairs, gutter maintenance and property improvement work throughout Fareham and the surrounding areas. Each scaffold installation is designed around the property, required working height and specific access requirements of the project.

For projects where access is only required to a specific section of a property, a scaffold tower can provide a practical alternative to a larger scaffold installation. Our access tower scaffolding at Richmond Rise in Fareham demonstrates how a secure platform can provide safe access for working at height.
